On a cool summer evening, gathered around a campfire with some of my closest friends and mentors, I stepped forward in a dramatic moment to accept a "call" to commit my life to Christian ministry.
I can say now, with confidence, that I had no idea what I was signing up for!
I am coming to a place in my life where I see my role as a professional pastor both exciting and a little wild all at the same time. The "office" of Christian minister in an established congregation is a rewarding place to be. Simultaneously, it is a very strange role that we as ministers are asked to take on. Some pastors very willingly accept the role and the expectation placed upon their lives as they are expected to be as apostle Paul claims, "all things to all people." While other pastors, like myself, wrestle with the paradoxical and frustrating parts of this job. (I can hear some folks throwing penalty flags already for my use of the word "job" and not "calling" but this is a topic to be tackled later.)
So, to be true to my "style," I ask you the questions. What do you expect from a pastor? What is the most important role or duty of the minister? What kind of person should the pastor be?
